General Stairlift Questions

What is a stairlift?

A stairlift is a motorized chair that travels along a rail mounted to your staircase. It safely carries a person up and down the stairs, allowing those with mobility challenges to access different levels of their home independently.

How does a stairlift work?

Stairlifts are powered by a quiet motor and rechargeable batteries. The user sits on the seat, fastens the seat belt, and uses simple controls (usually a joystick or buttons on the armrest) to glide smoothly up or down the stairs. The lift automatically stops at the top and bottom landings.

Can other people still use the stairs?

Yes! Stairlifts are designed with this in mind. The seat, armrests, and footrest fold up compactly against the wall when not in use, leaving plenty of room for others to walk up and down the stairs normally.

Are stairlifts safe?

Absolutely. Stairlifts include multiple safety features including seat belts, obstruction sensors, swivel seats for safe entry/exit, and battery backup in case of power outages. When properly installed and used, they are very safe mobility devices.

Installation Questions

How long does stairlift installation take?

Most straight stairlift installations take 2-4 hours. Curved stairlifts require custom manufacturing (4-6 weeks) and the installation itself takes 4-6 hours. We can often provide same-day installation for straight stairlifts.

Do stairlifts damage walls or stairs?

No. Stairlifts mount directly to the stair treads, not to the wall. The rail system is secured using brackets attached to the stairs. Your walls remain completely untouched. If the stairlift is ever removed, only small screw holes remain in the stairs.

Can a stairlift be installed on narrow stairs?

Yes, modern stairlifts can be installed on stairs as narrow as 28 inches. The seat and footrest fold up when not in use, typically leaving about 12 inches of additional clearance for others to pass.

Do you need to modify your home's electrical system?

Usually not. Most stairlifts simply plug into a standard household outlet. The unit charges when parked at either end of the rail, so it runs on battery power during use. No special wiring is typically required.

Can stairlifts be installed on curved or L-shaped stairs?

Yes. Curved stairlifts are custom-manufactured to fit the exact specifications of your staircase, whether it has one curve, multiple turns, or intermediate landings. The rail is precision-engineered to follow your stairs' unique path.

Cost & Financing

How much does a stairlift cost?

We install Bruno stairlifts exclusively. The Bruno Elan (our most popular model) runs $3,000-$5,000 installed. The Bruno Elite with 400 lb capacity is $4,000-$6,000. Custom curved stairlifts (Bruno Elite CRE-2110) start around $10,000-$15,000+. We provide free, no-obligation quotes so you know exactly what to expect.

Why do you only install Bruno stairlifts?

Bruno is the #1 stairlift brand in North America and the only one still made in the USA. After testing equipment from multiple manufacturers, Bruno's quality and reliability were clearly superior. Plus, parts are always available domestically — no waiting months for overseas shipments when you need service.

Are there financing options available?

Yes, we can discuss financing options during your consultation. Many customers also explore options like home equity loans, medical credit cards, or payment plans to make stairlifts more affordable.

Are used stairlifts available?

We occasionally have certified pre-owned Bruno straight stairlifts available at reduced prices. These units are thoroughly inspected, refurbished, and come with a warranty. Curved stairlifts are custom-made and rarely available used since they're designed for a specific staircase.

Medicare & Insurance

Does Medicare cover stairlifts?

Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover stairlifts because they are classified as home modifications rather than durable medical equipment (DME). Medicare only covers equipment that serves a medical purpose and is usable outside the home.

Does insurance cover stairlifts?

Most private health insurance plans do not cover stairlifts for the same reasons as Medicare. However, some long-term care insurance policies may provide coverage. We recommend checking with your specific insurance provider.

Are there other funding options?

Yes! Several alternatives may help: VA benefits for veterans, Medicaid waiver programs in some states, state vocational rehabilitation programs, non-profit assistance programs, and Area Agencies on Aging. We can provide information on local resources during your consultation.

Are stairlifts tax deductible?

Stairlifts may be tax deductible as a medical expense if your total medical expenses exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income and you itemize deductions. Consult your tax advisor for guidance on your specific situation.

Maintenance & Repairs

How often does a stairlift need maintenance?

We recommend annual maintenance to keep your stairlift running smoothly. This includes safety checks, cleaning, lubrication, and battery testing. Regular maintenance can extend the life of your stairlift and prevent unexpected breakdowns.

What happens if the power goes out?

Stairlifts run on rechargeable batteries, not direct electrical power. The batteries charge when the lift is parked at charging points (usually at the top and bottom of the stairs). This means your stairlift will continue to work during power outages.

Do you repair all brands of stairlifts?

Yes, we service all major stairlift brands including Acorn, Bruno, Stannah, Harmar, AmeriGlide, Handicare, and more. Our technicians are trained to diagnose and repair issues on virtually any make and model.

What is the warranty on a new Bruno stairlift?

Bruno stairlifts come with a 2-year parts warranty. Outdoor models (like the SRE-2010E and CRE-2110E) have an extended 5-year warranty since they're built to withstand the elements. We also hold Texas Elevator Contractors License #20473 and stand behind every installation.

Other Lift Options

What if I use a wheelchair?

If you stay in your wheelchair, a Bruno vertical platform lift (VPL) is a better option than a stairlift. Bruno VPLs have a 750 lb capacity and lift up to 10 feet — like a mini elevator for your home. We install these for porches, decks, split-level homes, and garage entries throughout Houston.

What's the difference between a stairlift and a platform lift?

A stairlift has a seat and requires the user to transfer from their wheelchair. A vertical platform lift (VPL) is a flat platform that moves straight up and down — you roll your wheelchair on, press a button, and it raises you to the next level. VPLs are ideal when you can't transfer to a seat.

Can you install lifts outdoors?

Yes! We install outdoor Bruno stairlifts (SRE-2010E, CRE-2110E) and outdoor Bruno VPLs. All outdoor models come with a 5-year warranty and weather-resistant components built to handle Houston's heat, humidity, and rain.

How much does a vertical platform lift cost?

Bruno VPLs range from $5,000-$15,000+ depending on the lift height needed. The VPL-3100 (up to 4 ft) is the most affordable. The VPL-3100B goes up to 6 ft. The VPL-3200B reaches up to 10 ft for higher applications. All have 750 lb capacity.
